Similan Islands Marine National Park is undoubtedly one of the best dive destinations in South-East Asia. The marine park consists of nine islands, whose sheltered eastern side is mainly gentle sandy slopes, soft and hard coral reefs with an abundance of various marine organisms. On the more exposed western side the islands a rougher, with great granite boulder formations creating tunnels and swimthroughs. All in all, the underwater scenery is very varied and exciting. Steady, medium strength currents bring a constant flow of food for enormous schools of pelagic fish.
The Similan Islands has about fifty named dive sites, and more are discovered each year.
Shark Fin Reef
Maximum Depth: 40 meters
Current: Medium - strong
Visibility: 10 - 25 meters, subject to weather
Sloping wall at the northern and more steeper drop-off on the southern part of the reef. Rocks resembling fallen pillars and commonly spotted sharks and rays together make this very interesting dive site. At 16 meters a large swim-through that works as a gate to the other side.
Elephant Head
Maximum Depth: 40+ meters
Current: Medium - strong
Visibility: 10 - 25 meters, subject to weather
One of Similan's best sites. Huge boulders and interesting caverns, tunnels and swim-throughs in all depth levels. At the southernmost deepest site a good place to spot reef sharks. Plenty of hard and soft corals all around and good variety of marine life.
Christmas Point
Maximum Depth: 35 meters
Current: Weak - medium
Visibility: 20 - 35 meters, subject to weather
At the deeper parts of the site you will find boulders and swim-throughs. Lots of soft coral all around the walls and when swimming southeast to the shallower part of the reef, lots of lionfish, pufferfish and angelfish can be spotted on the way. Occasionally Manta Rays.
Koh Bon
Maximum Depth: 40 meters
Current: Changes from mild to strong
Visibility: 20 - 40 meters, subject to weather
Beautiful underwater scenery around this little island. Koh Bon is famous for a strange hole right through the island. Steep rocky wall that slopes down to over 40 meters offers good change of spotting leopard shark and rays on the sand. This dive site is also famous for big pelagic creatures like Manta Rays and the massive Whale Shark.
Koh Tachai
Maximum Depth: 40 meters
Current: Mild - medium
Visibility: 15 - 35 meters, subject to weather
Two large underwater pinnacles and strong currents guarantee an interesting marine life. Big schools of barracuda, trevally and batfish. This site has lots of giant sea fans.
Richelieu Rock
Maximum Depth: 40 meters
Current: Changes from moderate to strong
Visibility: 5 - 30 meters, subject to weather
If the conditions are good we do 2 dives at Richelieu Rock, a small limestone outcropping about 18 km east of Surin Islands. This site consists of one large pinnacle and several smaller ones that all rise steeply from the sand bottom at about 33 m. Richelieu Rock offers colourful soft corals and a huge variety of marine life. This is one of the best places in the world to dive with whale sharks in clear water.
